The field of aquaculture and fishing teaches, everything needs knowing about raising and exploiting aquatic life. The field researches the biological mechanisms involved in fish farming techniques.  A postgraduate degree in aquaculture and fisheries fosters knowledge of the principles and practices of aquaculture in the areas of nutrition and water quality, reproduction and genetics, hatchery management, ecology and physiology, husbandry and production, health management and disease control, product quality, aquaculture system and technology, experimental design and statistics for biology, fisheries biology and management, and bio-business.

Fisheries and aquaculture have a real stake in providing the world's increasing population with food fish and protein. The need for sustainable practices and the education of upcoming fisheries and aquaculture scientists, culturists, and managers has been reinforced by the continuing decline in capture fisheries, the threat and unpredictability of climate change, the increasing global human population, and the environmental impact of aquaculture systems. This postgraduate degree program is intended to ensure that students are trained from the beginning stages to the stage of active engagement. It offers distinctive hands-on field and laboratory methods that are necessary for solving current issues in the industry.

The fundamentals of fisheries and aquaculture processes, including catch, processing, preservation, packaging, and marketing, will be covered with the students. The management of fish farms, pond construction and installation of culture enclosures, management of culture facilities, cage culture, hatchery management, captive breeding, fingerling production, aquarium design, ornamental fisheries, genetic engineering, production of natural food and feed, and integrated culture techniques for finfish and shellfish are additional topics that students will be instructed in. Additionally, creative research on fish reproductive biology that aims to increase Nigeria's possibilities for cultivable species will be encouraged.
